"The old eunuch, on his command, pulls out one of these jars and places it in front of him.
This man is transfigured; indeed, he seems to radiate voluptuousness as he plunges his hand into the opening of the jar. He pulls out a handful of perfect, shining spheres of various sizes, but all of the same orientation, and scatters them on a dark-colored sheet, where they run like marvelous little moons.
- Why are you putting them in water?
- This water is absolutely pure rainwater, water that has never touched the earth, and such as is born of the union of sky fire and white clouds.
You know that pearls are dewdrops that fall from the sky on moonlit nights and carry with them, into the deep sea, a little of that marvellous, gentle light of the star that counts our time.
The pearly sadafs receive in their silky mantles these precious tears of the night, and in the mystery of the sea, the pearls, daughters of the water of the sky and the moon, take shape.
Have you ever looked at pearls on a black sheet in the moonlight?
Well, do it when the month is on its fifteenth day and you'll see something unforgettable..."
